Japan Trip Fabric Hunting - Day 1

I am sorry if I haven’t replied your emails. Managed to clear all of them today and some will be very disappointed with my answers since I do not have the time to sew the bags and also cut the fabric or even sell them.

The reason I am updating the blog today is to share with you the experience of fabric hunting in Japan. This plan started in 2010 when I was all out into bags and fabric part time business apart from my 9-5 job.

It was my colleague who has been to Japan twice suggested the idea that I should go to Japan myself and visit the fabric town. Of which I was reluctant in the beginning since my husband was away working in Dubai. She has been to the fabric town in her last trip, unfortunately it was on a Sunday so there weren’t that many shops opened.

It all happened when Air Asia X had an offer to Japan sometime back in Nov 2010. I got the nod from hubby to leave the kids for 4 days and my parents agreed to look after them. I was feeling guilty actually to leave the kids with my parents since every time I went to Dubai, my parents are the ones that have to sacrifice their time to be with my kids. These include sending them to school, prepare their meals and etc. But my mom was adamant that I should go since she knew that I love fabric.

We almost shelved our trip when there was a tsunami in March. Only after raya, we started preparing our itineraries. Submitted our visa application a week after raya. Booked our hotel and hostels at the same time too. Please bear in mind that the two of us will be on our own. Therefore both of us has to be fit and fully prepared to walk.

Fabric shops that we planned to visit :

1. Tomato, located in Nippori Fabric Town, the largest shop in fabric town with a few outlets on the street.

2. Yuzawaya, they have many branches in Tokyo as well as in Japan

3. Okadaya, located at Shinjuku.

4. Marunan, located at Shibuya.

5. Uniqlo, an apparel store like the one we have in KLCC.

On 29th September we took the 2:30pm flight and arrived in Haneda Airport at 10:45pm. Took the free shuttle from the airport to Toyoko Inn and spent a night there. The next morning took the same shuttle again to Haneda airport with our huge luggage (thinking that we shop like crazy hehehe). From the airport we took the subway into Tokyo. The ride took us about 50 minutes.

We arrived at the Kuramae station around 11am and took a minute walk to our hostel at K’s Hostel. You can check the link here. Paid the hostel fees for two nights and left our luggage there. Check in time was 3pm and we have ample time to go to Nippori Fabric Town.

From Kuramae station we took the Asakusa line to Asakusa. From Asakusa we took the Ginza line to Ueno. From Ueno we took the Yamanote Line to Nippori. From the Nippori station we walk for 500 meters to reach the Nippori Town. You can follow the metro lines route from the link below.

Since I was too excited with too many shops to visit, I forgot to take pictures. You can view the pictures from the link above or just google images for Nippori Town . In Tomato, one can find everything under one roof. Each floor housed different types of fabric. The fabric ranges from cotton, lycra, wool, knitted cotton, jersey, oil-cloth, linen and etc. One will be spoilt with choices.

We spent about 3 hours there and left the place with some fabric in hand. I wasn’t my usual self (which is shop like there is no tomorrow) like I was when I shopped in Dubai, mainly because the price was way to high for my budget. Had to stop my urge of buying more fabrics as I still have lots of them from my recent shopping spree in Dubai last March.

Reached the hostel at 3:10pm, we checked-in, washed up and performed our prayers. We unpacked our bags and took an hour rest before we left again for beads shopping nearby Kuramae. Couldn’t find anything that pleased our pockets as most of the beads were way too expensive. Had dinner of Maggi mee in the hostel. The free wifi connection was super duper fast. I continued with my Nora Elena series from tonton.com after chatting with kids and hubby.

Selamat Hari Raya

To all moslem crafters and customers, I would like to wish you Selamat Hari Raya. I have been out from this blogging world for so many months and I admit that I do miss sewing very much but time is not on my side.

I am so looking forward to the 9 days holidays next week. My eldest will be having her break from college. The best thing is my husband is also back here in KL for good (one of the main reason that the sewing machine has been put aside ahaks). No more waiting and sending him at the airport. Praying very hard that he doesn't get transferred overseas again.

As usual for the last 5 years we always take the opportunity of this long raya holidays for the family to go on vacation. Because this is always the time when all of us will be on long holidays. And the destination will always be the same, the beach, the beach, the beach.

And two months after raya my project will go live. Urggghh.. that means what? Lots of work coming. But before the project go live, I have another place to go, which i have planned and booked the ticket since last year. Sorry boss, I can't change the date unless you want to pay for it hehehe. Looking forward to this trip. It is not going to be a holiday but more like shopping. Yes shopping for fabric. Where to? Aha.. not going to tell you. No more middle east ok, since hubby is already back here. But I do miss shopping fabric in Dubai. I told my hubby, there is no more bi-yearly "balik kampung' trip for me to Dubai anymore. He said, "Dulu you kata, asyik dubai dubai dubai, and now dah miss pulak". What to do, we are human right? hehehe.

Alright, time is up! Gotta go and finish up the last bit of my work, then can declare "goyang kaki" for the day.

Dear all,

I wish to apologize to those who have emailed me requesting for fabric. Since i came home from my holiday and my official trip I have been very busy with work. Furthermore I am involved in a project in the office which will last until end of the year or maybe till 1st qtr of next year. Therefore I don't think I have the time to entertain request for fabric.

Those newly bought fabric will be kept neatly and nicely in the my cupboard until i have more free time to snap and post here.

My hubby is also back home for good after 5 years working abroad and we are taking this opportunity to rekindle the lost time with him.

After I came home from the land of sand I went on official duty to the kingdom of sayam. My two suitcases from both trips were still unpacked and here I am knocking on my keyboard again trying to complete my work. As they have seen me sewing bags with multi colors strap. I just love to use these colored straps for my bags as they bring cheers and life to a bag.

Hi Everyone!

Gong Xi Fa Cai to my chinese friends who are celebrating .

I took 2 days leave and got 9 days off this week. Heaven on earth! The plan was to fly somewhere but had to cancel it for some reason at the very last minute. It's ok, but I get to spend time at home with my four kiddos. My daughter is also on semester break and we get to go out to eat and eat and eat. With that 9 days leave of which half is already gone, I managed to rearranged my fabric, my strap and whatever craft material that I have. Phew!!! That was one big task. Those to be sold has been put aside and those remnants have become beautiful tote bags. Some of them have been given away to my special friends and relatives without me having the time to snap them.

However, in order not to let you ardent readers of mine go away without seeing any new bags. I still do have some up for grabs. Below are the new design that I made, instead of looking at that straight boxy bag, now I made them rounded at the bottom with that cute two little darts.

Using all fabric cotton canvas for both outer and inner which make these bags REVERSIBLE... that's the best part. If you are bored with one you can change to another. Another weekend was over and for me it was a splendid weekend again. Spending time with the kids and fabrics. This time around the tutti frutti feeling hit me and below are the collections. It's a boxy bag measuring at 11"H x 9.5"W x 4"D. I would say this can be used as a lunch bag or an outing bag with the kids to the park to store a few diapers, wet towel and a milk bottle. This would be just great for that.

As for the lining, I used polyester and japanese cotton.

Kindly ensure you are at the home page when you are filling the form otherwise an error will occurs. (trying hard to figure this out).

I don't believe in accepting payment before the bag is completed. The basis is that I trust you. I will reply to your email informing the expected date of completion.

Once the bag is ready, I will send an email with photos of the bag, total cost and information of my bank account.

Upon receipt of payment, please give me 3 days for packing before I deliver the bag to you via registered mail which will take 3 to 5 working days.

Oh no... another le beau sac. The last time i did this type of bag was september last year. I did one for my daughter too before the holiday but hers has got the zipper with it. Now that I have started and i can't stop. Will anyone buy? It's ok I still have birthdays coming if this doesn't sell. This time I used the soft cotton as the lining so that the strap can be tied. Another le beau sac (given name by Menaka D). Oh yes before I forget, le beau sac will be the generic name for this type of bag. This time it is made from upholstery fabric for both outer layer and lining. A mixture of turqoise blue and brown on the outside and dark brown for the inside. Great for mom, student and anyone who are in a rush. Just chuck your things in there and you are ready to go.

When I first started sewing bags in July 2008, I sew my own label like below.

Exactly a year after sewprettypink was established I now have woven label like below. For the new bags, I will start using the woven label.

Only upon request will I use the handsewn label with a fee of RM3. This is because the handsewn label takes longer time to sew.

Comparing the two labels, but I guess the handsewnn one is unique and that is what i called everything is handmade from the labels to the bags.

So excited about it can't wait to produce more bags!

Alhamdulillah I managed to complete the bulk order for my darling daughter and back into producing new designs. Give me a few days more because I am trying to rearrange my shop, if i have the time (seems 24 hours is not enough for me). The old entries on the fabric has somewhat gave confusions to some readers. I am sorry for that as I have made you drool over fabrics that is not available anymore, again I am sorry.

Like I said earlier, I have all the fabric photos, but I need to find that little time to upload into flickr. Once that is done I will feel great. From there, you can start choosing your material to mix and match. Oh no what have I just did, exposing myself to accept orders? I wish I could fulfill each and every request from you but urghhh.. there is always a BUT right? Ok, we will see how, I don't want to make empty promises. As I have replied to some of you, I sew because of leisure. I just love to see the end product by mixing and matching the colors and patterns. Converting my leisure to a major business? I don't think I am ready yet. We go slow ok.

Keeping low and more fabrics

Dear Readers,

This blog will be on hiatus for a while as I have many orders to complete. I will not be able to sew new designs and new bags maybe until end of the week. Some even requested me to post the fabric collections I have so they can pick and choose the bag designs and fabric. That is great! But I hardly have time to rearrange my blog and the pictures. I have them all in my pcs and just waiting time for me to post them in flickr. We will see how it goes as I have the duty as a mother and employee too.

Thank you for dropping by. This blog is about my handmade bag. Featured here are some bags which I have made for some of my silent readers and bloggers whom I know thru blogging. These bags are made by me when everybody else in the house are sound asleep. Therefore please excuse me for the late delivery. Hope you like my product and do drop me a line or two if you would like to order one at anilsahibad@yahoo.com.

Some notes for you if you would like to have one. The price of each bag may vary depending on the fabric, interfacing and accessories used. Sometimes the outer layer is cheap but due to its softness a hard expensive fabric inner is used to give it some body. The fabric I use can be cotton, uphosltery or anything that I may find suitable depending on the design, you can check it out here. If you want to have a different design on a different fabric is also possible provided that the material is still on sale at the shop. Most of the materials are bought locally from the shops in Kuala Lumpur. Since I am working and I only sew at nite, a bag can be completed in 5 days depending on the complexities of the design.
